What 299,000 AI Agent API Calls Tell Us About the Machine Economy

Published August 1, 2026 · 7 min read · minia2a.uk

minia2a.uk is a marketplace where AI agents discover, call, and pay for APIs — automatically, in USDC, on Base L2. No API keys, no monthly subscriptions, no human in the loop. An agent finds a service, calls it, pays for it, and gets the result. All in one HTTP round-trip via the x402 protocol.

We've now processed 299,000+ requests from 115 registered AI agents across 174 pay-per-use services. Here's what the data tells us about the emerging machine-to-machine economy.

The numbers tell a clear story: agents are hungry for infrastructure. Gas estimation, captcha solving, web scraping — these aren't "AI" features. They're the plumbing that every autonomous agent needs to function in the real world.

What Agents Are Actually Paying For

The top 10 most-used services reveal what autonomous agents consider essential infrastructure:

Three patterns stand out:

1. Infrastructure First, Intelligence Second

The top services — gas estimation, captcha solving, web scraping — aren't "intelligent." They're the boring-but-essential utilities that let autonomous agents interact with the world. An agent that can't solve a CAPTCHA can't book a flight. An agent that can't estimate gas can't transact on-chain.

2. The Long Tail Is Real

Beyond the top 10, there are 86 services with active trial usage — from email verification and PDF text extraction to DNS lookups, language detection, QR generation, and regex explanation. Agents have wildly diverse needs, and no single API provider covers them all. A marketplace model is the only viable architecture.

3. Every Agent Becomes a Power User

With 500 free credits per agent registration, individual agents quickly burn through trials across multiple endpoints. A single agent typically tests 8–12 different services before settling on their core toolkit. The trial economy is the discovery mechanism.

This is the central challenge — and opportunity — of the agent economy. Agents register, explore, and consume free credits enthusiastically (299K requests from 115 agents). But converting that exploration into paid usage requires solving a uniquely agent-native problem:

Agents don't have wallets. They don't have bank accounts, credit cards, or KYC. The x402 protocol solves the payment rail — HTTP 402 + USDC on Base — but agent developers still need to fund the wallet their agent uses. That's the missing piece, and it's what we're building: an end-to-end tutorial showing how to create an agent with its own funded wallet in under 10 minutes.

Why This Matters Now

July 2026 was the month agent payments stopped being experimental and became infrastructure:

x402 Foundation Launched — 40 Members

Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, AWS, Coinbase, Ripple, Circle, Cloudflare, Shopify, and 30 others formally established the x402 protocol's governance under the Linux Foundation. HTTP 402 is no longer a dormant spec — it's an industry standard.

MoonPay PayBox: ChatGPT + Claude Can Now Pay

Launched July 29. Built on x402 and MPC wallets. The first consumer-facing product where "my AI agent paid for something" is a real user experience, not a demo.

110M+ Cumulative x402 Transactions

$15M+ in on-chain agent volume across Base, Solana, and Polygon. 76% of these transactions fall below Visa's $0.30 fee floor — stablecoins on L2s are the only viable settlement layer.

What's Next for minia2a

We're focused on three things:

  1. Closing the wallet gap. Making it trivially easy for any agent developer to create and fund a wallet that their agent can spend from. Our Build a Paying Agent tutorial walks through this step by step.
  2. Growing the service catalog. The more APIs available, the more valuable the marketplace becomes. If you have an API that AI agents would pay to call, register it here.
  3. Driving paid conversion. The trial economy works for discovery. Now we need to make the jump from "exploring" to "paying" as natural for an agent as it is for a human developer.
