State of Agent Payments 2026

x402 hits 100M transactions. Visa + Artemis publish. Stripe launches MPP. The agent economy is no longer coming — it's here.

TL;DR: In the last 12 months, machine-to-machine agent payments went from experimental protocol to production infrastructure. x402 alone processed 100M+ transactions. Visa, Stripe, Coinbase, AWS, Google, Microsoft, and Circle are all in. The window to build the agent payment marketplace is right now.

The Big Picture

July 2026 marks an inflection point for M2M payments. Three events in rapid succession:

The x402 Protocol

x402 is the standard for agent-native payments. Built on HTTP 402 (Payment Required), it embeds USDC payment into the web request cycle:

  1. Agent calls an API endpoint
  2. Server responds HTTP 402 with a payment challenge
  3. Agent signs the challenge with its wallet (EIP-3009, gasless)
  4. Payment settles in ~200ms on Base L2
  5. Agent retries the request → gets the result

Timeline:

"The combination of AI breakthroughs (Claude 4.5, GPT Codex 5.2) and falling blockchain settlement costs has made 1-cent to $1 micropayments economically viable for the first time." — Visa/Artemis Report, July 2026

The Competitive Landscape

Protocol Backers Status Volume
x402 Coinbase, Cloudflare, Circle, Visa, Stripe, Linux Foundation Production 100M+ tx, $15M+
MPP (Machine Payments Protocol) Stripe, Tempo, Visa Early production 115K tx, ~$25K
Pilot Protocol Wallet Pilot Protocol Beta (v0.3.3) N/A — just launched
minia2a.uk Independent Production 154 services, 37 agents

Where minia2a Fits

The landscape has big players building the protocols (x402, MPP) and the wallets (Coinbase, Stripe). But there's a gap: no one is building the marketplace layer.

minia2a.uk fills this gap:

The opportunity: x402 has 422K buyers but only 5.3K sellers. That's a 80:1 buyer-to-seller ratio. The bottleneck is service discovery and provider onboarding — exactly what a marketplace solves.

Challenges (and Why They're Solvable)

The Visa/Artemis report flags real concerns:
