The Agent Payment Stack: July 2026

Circle's $3B ARC raise. MoonPay's cross-chain wallet standard. OpenAI+Stripe's commerce protocol. The infrastructure for AI agents to hold and spend money is being built right now. Here's how the stack fits together — and where minia2a fits in.

The Stack: 4 Layers of Agent Payment Infrastructure

In July 2026, the agent payment stack has crystallized into four distinct layers. Each has multiple players, and the winners at each layer are starting to emerge.

🔑 Layer 1: Agent Wallets (Key Management)
How agents hold private keys and sign transactions. Programmatic, no human clicking "approve." MPC, embedded, or self-custodial.
Players: Circle Agent Stack (programmable wallets), MoonPay Open Wallet Standard (cross-chain), Privy (embedded), Turnkey (MPC), Coinbase AgentKit
💰 Layer 2: Payment Rails (Money Movement)
How money actually moves between agents. Stablecoins, L2s, nanopayments. Speed and cost matter — agents make lots of tiny payments.
Players: USDC on Base/Solana/Arbitrum, Circle CCTP (cross-chain), agenticpay (Solana USDC + x402), MoonPay (cross-chain)
📡 Layer 3: Protocol Standards (How Agents Agree)
The handshake layer. An agent requests a service, the server responds with a price and payment address. Standard formats so any agent can pay any service.
Players: x402 (HTTP 402 + USDC), Agentic Commerce Protocol (OpenAI + Stripe, Apache 2.0), Z-ZERO (zero-trust MCP payments), MCP (Model Context Protocol)
🏪 Layer 4: Service Marketplaces (Discovery)
Where agents find services to pay for. Search, categories, pricing, documentation. The "app store" for the agent economy.
Players: minia2a.uk (174 services, 115 agents), Circle Agent Marketplace, agenticpay service registry

July 2026: The Month Agent Payments Went Mainstream

Circle Goes All-In on Agents

Circle open-sourced its Agent Stack Starter Kits in early July, providing drop-in code for LangChain, Claude Agent SDK, OpenAI Agents SDK, Vercel AI SDK, and Google ADK. The kits give any AI agent a USDC wallet with gas-free nanopayments as low as $0.000001.

Circle also raised $222M in an ARC token presale, valuing the Arc network at $3B. The message is clear: the company that issues USDC ($60B+ market cap) is betting its future on agents as the primary USDC users.

Why this matters: When the issuer of the world's second-largest stablecoin builds tooling specifically for AI agents, it's not a niche — it's the next major payment vertical. Circle has stated publicly that agents will surpass humans in USDC transaction count within 2 years.

MoonPay Enters With Cross-Chain Standard

MoonPay released its Open Wallet Standard — a cross-chain wallet framework supporting Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin, and more. Backed by PayPal, OKX, Circle, Ripple, Solana Foundation, and TON Foundation, it's the first agent wallet standard with this level of industry backing.

The big question: Will cross-chain fragmentation hold back adoption? An agent on Solana can't easily pay an agent on Base without bridging. Circle's CCTP solves this for USDC, but the UX still needs work. minia2a currently settles on Base — but the marketplace model is chain-agnostic.

OpenAI + Stripe: Commerce Protocol

OpenAI and Stripe released the Agentic Commerce Protocol under Apache 2.0. It powers "Instant Checkout" in ChatGPT — an agent completes a purchase on a user's behalf. Different from M2M, but proves the thesis: agents are transacting autonomously.

Agenticpay: MCP-Native x402 Micropayments

The newest entrant: agenticpay — pay-per-tool-call micropayments via MCP + x402 on Solana. Full TypeScript monorepo with SDK, CLI, Eliza plugin, and Vercel AI SDK helpers. MIT licensed. Launched mid-July 2026.

This is the closest parallel to minia2a: both use x402 + USDC for agent payments. The difference: agenticpay is the payment rail; minia2a is the service marketplace. They're complementary layers of the stack.

Where minia2a Fits

minia2a is Layer 4: Service Marketplace. It's the place where an agent discovers, tests, and pays for APIs. Think "App Store for AI agents."

Our stack:

The thesis: As wallets (Layer 1) and payment rails (Layer 2) get commoditized by Circle and MoonPay, the value moves to discovery and network effects (Layer 4). The agent who can find the right service fastest wins. That's the marketplace opportunity.

What's Missing (July 2026 Edition)

  1. Cross-chain service discovery — an agent on Solana should be able to discover and pay for a service on Base without knowing which chain it's on
  2. Service quality ratings — agents need a way to signal "this API is reliable" vs "this one returns garbage"
  3. Agent-native authentication — OAuth is for humans. Agents need cryptographic identity tied to their wallet
  4. Dispute resolution — what happens when an agent pays but the service doesn't deliver? On-chain escrow?
  5. Fiat on-ramp for agents — most agents don't start with USDC. How do they get their first dollar?

The Bottom Line

July 2026 is the month the agent payment stack stopped being "interesting experiments" and started being real infrastructure with institutional backing. Circle's ARC raise, MoonPay's standard, and OpenAI+Stripe's protocol mean this isn't a crypto niche — it's the next layer of internet payments.

The question isn't whether agents will pay each other. It's which marketplace they'll use to discover what to pay for.
