The Agent Discovery Layer Just Got Two New Contenders — and They're Nothing Alike
Two things happened this week that reveal the agent economy's most important fault line.
Circle launched a Discovery API — 900+ verified endpoints, no API key required, 14 query parameters for filtering by category, chain, and price. Every listed service is pre-screened for sanctions compliance and operational health.
AIsa closed a $6.5M seed round led by Alibaba and Tribe Capital, bringing its total agent count to 50,000+ with 1,000+ API endpoints. It calls itself the "Amazon for AI agents."
Both are discovery plays. Both use x402 for payments. Both want to be the layer where agents find things to buy.
But they represent two fundamentally different answers to the same question: how should an autonomous agent discover a paid API?
Circle: Compliance-First Curation
Circle's Discovery API is designed like a financial product — because it is one. Circle holds a federal trust bank charter from the OCC. Its USDC stablecoin captures ~70% of transaction volume. Every service in its catalog is pre-vetted for sanctions compliance.
The API is genuinely open: no API key, no auth, no Circle account required. An agent can query it cold and get back a structured list of services with prices, chains, and categories. The 14 query parameters let agents filter by blockchain network, pricing model, and service type.
But the catalog is curated. Services don't self-register — they go through Circle's compliance screening. This means higher trust but slower growth. Every new service is a manual approval cycle away.
Circle's bet: agents need trusted services more than they need many services. The discovery layer is a compliance function.
AIsa: Marketplace Aggregation
AIsa is taking the opposite approach: aggregate everything, sort later. With 1,000+ endpoints, 100+ AI models, and 50,000+ agents, it's the highest-volume agent marketplace in the ecosystem. Its 150x agent growth and 200x API call growth (Feb–Jun 2026) came from organic demand with zero paid marketing.
The platform supports both fiat credits and stablecoin nanopayments via x402. It integrates with Circle, Visa, and Stripe on the payment side, and Jina, Seedance, and others on the model side. The positioning — "Amazon for AI agents" — suggests a marketplace where anything can be listed, rated, and purchased.
AIsa's bet: agents need choice more than they need guarantees. The discovery layer is a marketplace function.

Here's what's missing from both models: machine-readable readiness for autonomous agents.
When Claude Code auto mode goes default on August 14, millions of agents will need to discover, evaluate, and call APIs without parsing HTML documentation, without creating accounts via web forms, and without a human in the loop. Neither Circle's curated catalog nor AIsa's marketplace aggregation solves this specific problem.
What an autonomous agent needs on first contact:
- A single handshake endpoint that returns JSON: "I support x402, here's how to pay, here's how to register, here's what I offer."
- Trial-first access — the agent can try the service before committing funds. If it doesn't work, the agent moves on with zero cost.
- Verified liveness — the catalog doesn't just list services; it confirms they're actually up. 76% of listed x402 endpoints are dead. A catalog with dead services is worse than no catalog at all.
- Machine-readable 402 headers — when the agent hits a payment wall, it needs to know: how much? what token? what chain? what address? Without parsing a human-readable error page.
Why This Matters for Aug 14
In three days, Claude Code will enable autonomous agent spending by default. Agents will encounter payment walls for the first time at scale. The question is not whether the payment rails work — $50B in x402 volume says they do. The question is whether agents can discover the services they need before they hit that payment wall.
Circle is building discovery as compliance. AIsa is building discovery as a marketplace. Both are valid, both are funded, and both will capture a segment of the market.
But there's a third model that neither is pursuing: discovery as verification. A catalog where every service is probed, tested, and deactivated if it goes dark. A catalog where an autonomous agent can call one endpoint and get everything it needs to start making paid API calls — no web forms, no KYC, no human intervention.
Three days. The discovery layer is the bottleneck, and it's about to become the most important layer in the stack.
