What PayBox Actually Is

MoonPay PayBox is a non-custodial payment vault that installs as an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server inside ChatGPT or Claude. Once connected, the AI assistant gains a set of financial tools: check balances, swap tokens, bridge assets across chains, and — critically — pay for services using USDC via the x402 protocol.

x402 settlement. The AI signs a gasless USDC transfer via EIP-3009, resubmits the request with proof of payment, and receives the data — all in milliseconds.

Key architectural detail: "Every authorization is scoped to a single action and cannot be reused." The AI can propose but cannot unilaterally execute. The passkey is the gate. This follows the principle of least privilege — exactly the model that Visa, Mastercard, and regulators have been pushing for in agentic commerce standards.
