Why this matters: Service providers can now accept x402 payments on whichever chain their users are on. An agent on Base can pay a service on XRPL through facilitator bridging. The protocol is becoming chain-agnostic, exactly as designed.
Reality check: Independent analysts note a gap between headline figures and verifiable on-chain activity. Roughly half of reported volume may be self-dealing or wash trading. The sub-cent micropayment thesis is still being proven — 95% of value currently comes from $1+ transactions. The numbers are impressive but the market is still finding its footing.
Cloudflare moved x402 settlement into its Monetization Gateway, putting payment enforcement at the CDN edge. For service providers, this means they can add x402 payments to any API by configuring Cloudflare — no code changes needed. The gateway handles the 402 challenge, signature verification, and settlement before the request ever reaches the origin server.
Blockscout layered x402 onto its Pro API, which covers 120+ EVM chains. AI agents can now query block explorers, transaction histories, and contract state across any supported chain — paying per call in USDC with no API key registration.
Coinbase enabled corporate customers to accept payments from AI agents. Combined with AWS Bedrock AgentCore Payments (built with Coinbase + Stripe), this creates an enterprise-grade path for businesses to monetize APIs consumed by autonomous agents.
