The Stack Is Splitting Into Three Layers

Five major settlement rails. All doing essentially the same thing: move small amounts of USDC between machines. The differentiation here is thin — it's a race to the bottom on gas fees and latency. The winner won't be decided by technology; it'll be decided by distribution.

Layer 2: Authorization (Building)

This is where x402 lives — the protocol that decides whether a payment should happen, at what price, with what constraints. The HTTP 402 status code isn't just a payment demand; it's a contract offer: "this resource costs X USDC, payable to Y address on Z network."
