Two weeks ago, something happened that changes the trajectory of machine-to-machine payments: the Linux Foundation launched the x402 Foundation, bringing ~40 founding members — including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, AWS, Google, and Circle — under one roof to standardize agent payments.

The Open Problems
Even with the Foundation, three gaps remain:
- Accountability: How do you prove which agent authorized which payment, and who's liable when it goes wrong?
- Facilitator concentration: Most production traffic still routes through Coinbase's facilitator — not yet decentralized
- Discovery: How does an agent find services that accept x402? How does a developer get their API discovered?
