On July 29 in New York City, XDC Network co-founder Atul Khekade demoed Claude AI ordering and paying for coffee — autonomously, on-chain, settled in USDC. The launch of XDC AI marks the entry of a new type of competitor into the agent payment space: the enterprise-grade Layer 1 blockchain.
XDC is different from the agent payment competitors we've seen so far. It's not a payment protocol (x402), not a stablecoin issuer (Circle), not a cloud provider (Cloudflare), and not a marketplace (minia2a, AIsa). It's a Layer 1 blockchain network with institutional validators and enterprise partnerships.
| Dimension | XDC AI | Other Approaches |
|---|---|---|
| Consensus | Delegated Proof of Stake — validators include Deutsche Telekom MMS, NTT DOCOMO | Varies — most agent payment players don't run their own chain |
| Settlement | Gasless USDC (no native token needed for gas) | Base (x402), Solana (Cloudflare), multi-chain (Zero Hash) |
| Speed | ~2,000 TPS, 2-second finality | Base: ~1 TPS (L2 batches), Solana: ~2,000 TPS |
| Compliance | ISO 20022-aligned, Bridge (Stripe) for KYC/KYB | Varies — Circle leads on compliance, most startups light |
| Fiat Ramps | Bridge integration: USD/EUR → USDC, virtual IBAN/ACH accounts | OSL (AgentPay), Zero Hash — enterprise-grade but separate from chain |
| Agent Interface | MCP Connector API + ElizaOS plugin | MCP-native (Swarmwage, minia2a), REST API (Circle) |
The most unusual detail: XDC's validator set includes Deutsche Telekom MMS and NTT DOCOMO GLOBAL — two of the world's largest telecom operators. This is not a random choice. Telecom companies have:
A telecom-backed agent payment network could eventually offer something nobody else can: identity-attested agent payments at the network layer. Your phone company already knows who you are. If they also run the blockchain your AI agent pays through, that's a vertically integrated identity-to-settlement stack.
XDC AI spans multiple layers of the agent payment stack:
The danger for XDC: trying to do everything. The opportunity: vertical integration that nobody else can match because nobody else has telecom validators.
Khekade said XDC AI is in "pilot production already" with a "proper Fortune 500 rollout in the next two to three months." Research tools and travel booking integrations are on the roadmap for year-end.
This timeline is aggressive — but XDC has been building enterprise blockchain solutions since 2019. They're not a 6-month-old startup pivoting to AI. They have existing enterprise relationships, a live mainnet, and institutional validators.
The agent payment conversation has been dominated by crypto-native startups and Web3 infrastructure. XDC's entry — with telecom validators, Stripe fiat ramps, and ISO 20022 compliance — signals that traditional enterprise is not waiting for the startups to figure it out. They're building their own rails.
On August 14, Claude Code auto mode becomes default. A million agents will have $5/day budgets. They'll need to discover, test, and pay for APIs. XDC, Circle, Cloudflare, and a dozen others are all building infrastructure to capture this demand.
The winner won't be the best blockchain or the fastest settlement. It'll be the platform where an autonomous agent can type one command, find a working endpoint, try it for free, and pay for it — all in under 2 seconds, with machine-readable responses at every step.
The telecoms are coming. The payment rails are ready. The discovery layer is the bottleneck.
