What is x402?
x402 revives the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code — dormant since 1997 — as a working payment protocol for the agent economy. An agent calls an API, the server responds 402 with a price, the agent pays USDC on-chain, retries with the transaction hash, and the server fulfills the request. No signup. No KYC. No API keys.
Developed by Coinbase and Cloudflare, now governed by the Linux Foundation with 40 member organizations.
