What is x402?

x402 is an open protocol for internet-native micropayments. It activates the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code — a status that's been reserved since 1997 but never used in production until now. Here's what makes it different:

• No API keys. An agent pays per request with USDC instead of managing API keys.
• No accounts. The agent's wallet is its identity. No sign-up forms, no email verification, no dashboard.
• No chargebacks. Stablecoin payments settle on-chain. Final.
• Sub-cent costs. Gas fees as low as $0.001 on L2s like Base and Celo.

The flow: Agent → Server: "give me data" → Server: 402 Payment Required (amount, token, recipient) → Agent: signs payment, retries with proof → Server: verifies, responds. Five lines, no human involved.
